The Irish cob style horse that Calum would have given Gillian in the story would have been much smaller and stockier than his war horse, which was probably the foundation of today’s Percheron horses,  The Destrier.

Whether her stocky little horse could have won a race across the Scot mountain glens is not hard to imagine. The finely bred French horse would have had the length of stride, but would not have been as sure of foot on the rocks and crags.

Gillian’s horse would have been similar to the cobs above, but of course, the show horse world has turned the ancient breed into a stunning replica of the hardy work horses of the past.

I imagine Gillian making a fine picture of herself as she rode across the glen on her cob, hair blowing in the wind, wrapped in the beloved flag.
