When ‘Life Happens’
Cats: Most Popular|I often tell my friends that their best plans can be destroyed in a moment. ‘Life happens.’ There is no divine intervention. No spirit trying to force us into a macabre game of survival or an evil version of the childhood game ‘pick me - pick me.’
Life happens
We need to realize that it can happen to the best of us. Three weeks ago I was progressing at a great rate. Life was good. Work was good. Then I got sick. Now I am only allowed at the computer a few minutes at a time. It isn’t like they cannot fix the problem. It isn’t like the time I had the heart operation.
What do you do when life happens? You can become angry or depressed. OR, you can just move on the best you can. Taking one day at a time.
Writers have an advantage. When things get tough, they just step in and create an alternative reality. Stephen King writes the Langoliers and explores other peoples, their lives, their fears, and asks us if our greatest fears are not born inside yourself and our most vile demons created within us.
I see this a lot as I watch abusive people blame others for their problems. Or people who are too afraid to learn how to succeed…because they might actually succeed.
I spent 2 weeks being sick, and landed in the hospital. While some people around me panicked, and others withdrew, I found it a great method of analyzing people. Like the nurse who was so nice and acted like the perfect caregiver — until you asked about her husband then the facade drained.
There was also the doctor who knew better than everyone else - even claiming the lab tests which didn’t agree with his diagnosis had been done wrong.
In the end, everyone goes home. I went home a little happier after a nice little shot in the thigh. Everyone else when home, and created more character dynamics that all the world’s best authors could come up with in their most inspired moments.
