What is the World’s Biggest Commodity?

Cats: Uncategorized| No Comments »

Do you have any idea what the world’s biggest commodity is? If you are a writer and want a great topic to include in your story - you should? How can you build great novels without understanding the world you live in? There are amazing things to write about in your own home, in your own kitchen, on your own table.

sugarfrombrazil_2.jpgDo you know how many Sugar Types there are?  In 2006 Brazil produced thirty million tonnes of sugar, 20% of the world’s sugar production. Brazil exported 17.7 million tonnes, 40% of the sugar traded in the world that year.

Some say that Brazil could swamp the world’s market with cheap sugar. They did so in 2002, when a bumper sugar crop sent world prices plummeting to below five cents per pound.

Ethanol, is a product of sugar cane. In fact, much of the sugar cane crop is used for ethanol production.

Can you see a thriller in this? Instead of your next romance hero being the CEO of an ambiguous American corporation, what about a mysterious plantation owner?

Anne is Famous

My friend Anne had her first public speaking engagement today. She IMed me and said that she was scared silly. It was a small gathering at a library, only 30 minutes, but she thought it was much longer. I laughed with her. I remember some of my speaking engagments.

I know that promoting books can be hard. Anne is a well published author in libraries in the UK. She sells so well that she’s earned her advances back in the first quarter of sales. But she’s had a hard winter. Her agent was replaced by a daughter, and she hasn’t sold anything yet. Read the rest of this entry »

What is a Hero?

Cats: Writing Tips| 1 Comment »

My friend Mirella was the first one who told me that Calum (from The Pledge) was modled after my husband. Not even I’d noticed it until she mentioned it. I always find it interesting how we create characters.

I read both her other novels. I liked Bloodstone Castle the best. The hero was very bold. I asked Mirella what she thought was most important in a hero.

I believe the #1 quality is honour - to always try to do the honourable thing and comport oneself with that always in mind. Read the rest of this entry »

Friends in England

Cats: Uncategorized| No Comments »

I have writing friends in England. I want to go and visit. At the moment we just IM and phone.  Of course, I don’t use my phone service. I use phone cards and pay $.01 a minute to UK.  I don’t use a certain brand. Instead I go to a site that compares them all. Like this page of calling cards.

I know that some cards would vary. But why are some international calling cards priced at $.01 and others at $.09 per minute? That is a big difference on a 30 minutes call.  It makes it a little difficult to have a long girl-talk with my friends, unless I can find the cheapest cards.

I bought one of my dogs from England. Prince came over at 5 months old. We had a lot of talking to do before the pup came over. There was a lot more involved than I thought, vet problems, importing fees. I thought we had everything figured out, but was hit with another $800 in importing fees while the poor pup was sitting in the airport hanger. I was glad that I had a good calling card.

Freelance Editors

I have to love some of my friends. I have a professional editor friend
Tiffany Davis who edits for a couple publishing houses. I was bored today and asked her what she hates about publishing.

Editing for publishers can be difficult. At the publishing level, publishers are often concerned with quick turnaround, deadlines, and the bottom line; sometimes edits are sacrificed to make deadlines, especially if a major rewrite is needed. At the author level, there are quite a few authors who just want to receive their royalties. Those are the ones who do not want to make suggested edits, Read the rest of this entry »
